Non-Formal Education

We cannot always build the future for our youth,

But we can build our youth for the future

 FRANKLIN.D. ROOSEVELT

Non Formal Education (NFE) is a methodology where learning is related to what one can learn during daily life activities. NFE is mainly to attend the young people’s needs, aspirations and interests on a voluntary basis and learner- centred. The methods used in NFE are very diverse and based on creating healthy environments of trust and sharing experiences.

We got the opportunity to connect with the school students through Mr. Bhole who is Chairman of S. B. Firke Vidyalaya School, Thane.

Through the discussions on varied topics, we encourage Students to have such a time on their own where they can actively think on real-life problems and about the possible solutions. These discussions can be guided and monitored by KMF members or school teachers.

Mr. Saket Kanade, KMC member addressing school students

We started this initiative with the batch of 20 to 25 odd 9th Std students. As a general idea, we call this as Non-Formal education, as the scope of this initiative is still very open and may include various aspects.

The core activity we assigned to students is the ability to read, comprehend and apply to improve their horizon of thinking. So Reading an article or piece of literature, understanding and explaining the essence and then applying to problems and generating ideas was our main action items.

Initially, we started with lateral thinking (out of the box) exercises with students with various puzzles and games. Students have shown a lot of interest as these challenge their thinking. Science can be very fascinating and interesting; through this, we also took some scientific questions to encourage their curiosity.

We are also encouraging them for moral discussion and understanding their emotions and responses. This activity is basically to improve their ability to understand their own emotions and the emotions of others like friends, parents, teachers, etc. and use this emotional information to guide thinking and ultimately behaviour.

The initiative is in very primitive state. One step at a time they say, With the guidance of Dr Apte , and KMF members at Airoli centre we are moving ahead a little.
